Artists operate mainly by intuition, scientists mainly by procedural method. Not wholly, obviously: the pure version of either would lead to the total collapse of the mind, and maybe of reality itself. In fact, I think the best artists and scientists tend to overlap quite a bit in their approaches to the Big Questions. The lines between instinctual knowledge and methodical inquiry become blurred.
Take
for example. While his fascinating Subtack blog, might look like “pure” science on the surface, his investigations are powered by the same kinds of deep insights that propel the artist across the noosphere, to explore the so-called hidden layers of reality. The languages may sound very different, but the Rosetta touchstones are recognizable if you tilt your head and squint.Born a half-scientist on my father’s side, I can squint pretty good. For that reason, I’ve always wanted to have a longform, one-on-one chat with Harrison, if only so we could “go schizo” together with regards to the existence of these hidden layers, and what sorts of intelligent agents might be operating within them.
This is hopefully only the first such conversation. When you enter the arena of nested consciousness, parabiological organisms, psi phenomenon, and retarded demons who blunder into checkmates, you find the game clock runs out much faster than you want it to.
