It's quite funny in context, as he is describing his childhood in Catholic schools in NYC, with one of his teenage friends trying to pull one over on the slower priest in one of their classes. You can probably find it somewhere online, but that is my first bump into the "retard koan." My sense when I heard it in 1986 was that it was already something "in the public domain," so I don't really know when it properly entered the cultural landscape.
