Regarding readership, virtual knighthood, social reach, and the like: I'll be direct about some problems I have with this blog and ones adjacent to it (even though I am, or have been, a paying member of some of these substacks), why I don't participate in the Slack, and why I think the right has had trouble gaining traction more broadly. I've been struggling for awhile to articulate my internal struggle, but it came to me suddenly today, and the key is actually quite simple.
But first I have to tell a story. I am a regular member of a mainline Protestant Church (a large denomination which you surely would recognize). I also attend a Bible study every week. Today in the study group, while we were discussing an uncomfortable sociopolitical topic, I realized that I am, by far, the most conservative member of this Bible study group, despite being in a same-sex marriage (i.e. homosexual) unlike the others in the group and despite (maybe because) part of my personal spiritual practice involves Graeco-Roman paganism. I sat there, quietly censoring myself, trying to reconcile the warm feelings I have about my friends in the study group (and the church body in general) with how much I disagree with their political opinions. I guess I prayed for some kind of inspiration to see me through. And then the answer came and it was so simple: Compassion. And its close companion, Forgiveness. You know, Jesus Christ's principal message. I was then able to play the Devil's Advocate (as it were) and present the opposing, conservative viewpoint, in a way that was more-or-less acceptable to my friends.
What is missing here is compassion. It doesn't come through at all here, at least not to me. To be fair, it doesn't come through on the left-leaning side of social media either. But if we want to see a more just world, and especially if we want to see one in our lifetime and get there in a way that doesn't involve huge amounts of bloodshed, you, I, and everybody else are going to have to figure out a way to resonate compassion much more forcefully than is happening right now anywhere in the Western world, by anybody with any social reach.
I'm not saying that we should bend over to accept every destructive impulse that finds its way into the culture, but we should be able to avoid demonizing the Other and recognize fellow human beings as having valid perspectives even if we don't share them.
If we can't do that collectively as a culture, we're doomed. And if we can't do that, maybe we deserve to be doomed.
It saddens me that you think my writing lacks compassion. We are all struggling to find and tell the truth, after all, and the written word is a particularly treacherous path to it. I sometimes like to think of a writer as a kind of archer, whose arrows sometimes hit unintended targets. The better writers are usually the ones who practice more often, and develop the truer aim.
What's interesting is that this is exactly what I was trying to do with this article: narrow my focus and sharpen my aim. We've been thrown into a very weird camp, and there are various jackals and hyenas rummaging around inside it (not to mention some rats and snakes). If we were to take them at their word, they would gleefully harm some of the dearest people in my life because of X group trait. They "talk a lot of smack," as we used to say when I was a kid. I can only guess that they are miserable people, who may have suffered many losses and are trying to export some of that misery. I try to show compassion for them too, believe it or not. But I struggle.
As for your spiritual journey, it is fascinating to me. I think it would be worth reading about, and trying to understand. I'm on a pretty strange journey of my own, after all. That doesn't mean we will ever agree on certain things, including Very Big Things. But there is no bloodlust in me. I want to bring criminals to justice and fix the broken parts of the world. Part of that goal is indeed to coax compassion, forgiveness and mercy back to the table, which is the core of Christ's teachings as I understand them.
